Sonya MacTavish inherits a haunted estate in Maine, where she discovers a murder mystery centuries in the making.

What a boring, yet ambient, novel. The rich backstory and descriptive details of the mansion created an atmospheric setting. It’s too bad it’s releasing in November because it would be the perfect Halloween read with its haunting mood. Despite the excellent ambiance, it’s a pretty boring story. This is a haunted house story with an evil spirit, yet nothing truly terrifying happens. I want both the ambiance mixed with terrifying elements. Perhaps I just wanted too much horror that doesn’t really fit the romance genre.

The secondary characters, and I’m assuming the leads of the next in the series, had excellent chemistry together. However, the main romance between Trey and Sonya was super lacking, especially compared to the second leads. Not only did they have little chemistry with each other, but they hardly spent any time together. Sonya spent much of the novel learning about her heritage, working on her small business, and hanging with Cleo. Hell, her and Cleo would be a better match than her and Trey at this point.

The structure of the book is unlike any other NR paranormal series. Usually these books focus on a central romance with a very defined ending for the couple. While the overarching plot may still be ongoing, the romance is set for the couple as the next book will focus on a new couple. However, this book ends on a cliff hanger for the overarching plot with no defined ending for the couple. It felt like an unfinished draft, not a complete novel. I’m not sure how interested I am in continuing this series, but I’m glad I gave the first book a chance.
