When reporter Iris Winnow is given an assignment to go to the front to write about the war, she is dismayed to discover her nemesis, Romant Kitt, joining her.

Divine Rivals was such an interesting read. It started incredibly slow, but a plot twist around the 20% mark totally caught me off guard and made the story unputdownable. The romance between Iris and Roman is enchanting as it shows them connecting emotionally through a series of letters as well as competing against each other as reporters at the newspaper. While Iris is in the dark for much of the story about the identity of her pen pal, we do get to see how the letters affect Roman with the dual narrative POV. I also have to commend the author for writing some of the best trench warfare I've read in a long time. It felt visceral and overwhelming reading those scenes. It had a historical fiction feel with a hint of both stempunk and fantasy elements scattered within the story. I'm excited about the second book in the series, although despondent it will not be out until next year.
