Prisca and Lorian work to gather allies and resources in order to defeat King Sabium in this rather ho-hum second installment to the Kingdom of Lies series.

This was…fine. Everything is fine here, move along. But, in all seriousness, this failed to interest me. Prisca and Lorian’s “will they / wont they” status during the first third of the story didn’t work, particularly since Prisca’s devastation at Lorian’s secrets felt overamplified. It would have been one thing if she had been surprised by his identity, but she acted betrayed that he had lied at all. She knew he was keeping secrets from her in the first place so her anger toward him felt unjust and unearned. Her back and forth didn’t just occur with Lorian, but with herself and her role. It was an entire book of her monologuing ad nauseum about everything in her life. I don’t mind a character struggling with their emotions and fears, but it felt like all she did was struggle bus through 500+ pages.

The entire story was too predictable. It comes down to the fact I’ve read this story before - badass woman with a secret identity; male alpha warrior prince who is literally crazy about the badass woman; a group of zany comrades and friends; and warring kingdoms with various political machinations. So, perhaps at the end of the day, this book isn’t bad. It’s just that I’ve read this story before too many times to feel this is a unique take on the genre.
