When Violet Sorrengail enters herself to become a dragon rider to appease her military-minded mother, she slowly uncovers a deadly secret about her empire.

It has been a long, long, LONG time since a book hooked me so quickly. The action starts immediately when Violet enters the Rider's Quadrant, and it never really stops as she constantly encounters deadly obstacles during her first year in the program. For the most part, I enjoyed Violet - her compassion and intelligence make her someone easy to root for. Her overinflated confidence did annoy me occasionally, especially in moments when she was surrounded by more experienced soldiers and tacticians. She and her love interest, Xaden Riorson, had some AMAZING chemistry together. He is the perfect mixture between broody, secretive, and tortured. The connection between them is captivating and genuinely heartfelt with just enough spice to keep me coming back for more.

The world is rich and beguiling. It's hard to talk about Violet without talking about the dragon she bonds with. The relationship she builds with it is my favorite aspect of this book, and I cannot wait to see how that bond further develops in the sequel. This was hands down a five star read for me until the ending. I was annoyed, not surprised, at the twist that occurred. While the ending may have fallen flat for me, it by no means kept me from enjoying the overarching story. I can't wait to get my hands on the sequel!
