When Prisca accidentally displays a forbidden power in her village, she ends up on the run with a group of secretive mercenaries on a quest of their own.

Not going to lie - this started out as pretty generic. Prisca is the standard ordinary girl turned badass with a secret identity, and Lorian is the standard possessive alpha male drawn to her. The secondary characters, particularly Lorian's group of mercenaries, compliment the leads with their various personalities and quippy dialogue. I correctly guessed most of the turns and twists as the plot points match many other stories in the genre. And yet, I still found this a highly entertaining and enjoyable read. The story's pace picked up significantly after the halfway point as Prisca and Lorian's divergent storylines were woven together. I definitely felt invested in the characters and the romance by the end.

My biggest concern is not remembering the details of this story by the time the second book rolls out in August. I have found this happening more and more with fantasy romance series. I'll be invested in the story, but the length of time between installments means I lose many of the details. Sometimes I'll feel compelled to read the first book again, but many times I find myself skipping the rest of the series. We'll see if this has staying power.
