When school librarian Alexis Stone is seen in a scandalous pose with Texas gubernatorial candidate Logan Arthur, the two must pretend to date during the campaign to assuage a conservative supporter base.

The romance and premise was promising, but the contrived plot points pretty much ruined the experience for me. As an avid romance reader, I understand miscommunication is usually the number one reason why couples in these books do not get together until the end of the novel. This plot point just felt so contrived, making drama between the two main leads that truly did not need to be present. The excellent chemistry and character growth between Alexis and Logan was pretty much ruined because of the love triangle.

While this book looks like a lighthearted romance, it does tackle some heavy topics. Obviously many of them are political in nature due to the premise. Many are also driven by Alexis, who is dealing with past trauma. It may make for powerful character growth fodder, but it also could be hard for people to read if dealing with those issues in their own lives. Honestly, I thought the best part of this exploration of grief could be found in the Acknowledgment section where the author talked about losing her own father during the writing of this novel.
