A band of adventurers long past their prime agree to reunite to save the daughter of one of their own.

My husband and I decided to play D&D for the first time this fall. I'm incredibly fortunate to have a husband that can DM (and do an amazing job of it too). To get in the fantasy-vibe mood, I looked for some D&D-eque audiobooks for him as he crafted our adventure. When I came across Kings of the Wyld, it intrigued me so much I decided to listen to it myself. I am SO glad I did as it is now one of my top favorite reads, and audiobooks, this year!

While the story may be rather simple, the execution of it is complex and fascinating. Each of the main band mates bring a certain personality and style to the story - legendary Golden Gabe, dependable Clay Cooper, studious Arcandius Moog (the one I love most), snarky Matrick Skulldrummer, and killer Ganelon. This story does not dwell in the past - it follows the men from where they are now with snippets of their original escapades. The secondary characters are just as memorable and lovable as the leads. The worldbuilding is sumptuous in its details, and the journey is fraught with intriguing perils. Not only did it make me laugh, it made me ugly cry because my heart was bursting with so many emotions toward the end. If you love fantasy stories or you're looking for your next audiobook, give this a try.
